It’s a Monday, and a huge tarpaulin material is sprawled across the kitchen counter. For the unoriented, it’s a collapsed tent. Javi just got back from one of his routine hiking trips, and the drenched tent has been drying for hours.
In his bedroom he shows us a blanket he got from a hike up the Himalayas. “It’s real yak wool,” he says. “I worked hard for that!” Was it expensive? “No,” he clarifies, “It must be about 200 pesos.” It was the literal uphill battle he was talking about.
It’s a succinct snapshot of Javi’s life: the world of the outdoors permeating the indoor. Javi is an investment banker on weekdays and an intrepid adventurer on weekends. He also happens to be one of the motley crew assembled by Human for their “Adventure is Out There” campaign.
In the tradition first confronted by Human’s Carlos and Hannah, we challenge Javi with the Proust questionnaire.
What is your idea of perfect happiness?
This is a hard one, but probably something that comes close would be being outdoors and in the mountains. Nothing quite seems to beat the fresh air and epic views.
What is your greatest fear?
Definitely has to be not being able to do everything that I dream of doing.
What is the trait you dislike most about yourself?
I’m a scatterbrain! One time, I lost my credit card in Tokyo and only found out at the end of my trip since I was in the mountains the whole time. Good thing no one used it!
What is the trait you dislike most in others?
Maybe when people think they are cool? Anyone who thinks they are cool are instantly un-cool in my book.
Which living person do you most admire?
My brother, Carlos. I have never met anybody as strong-willed and determined as this dude. He has been fighting one of the rarest forms of cancers for the past two years, but his optimism has never wavered.
What is your greatest extravagance?
Not only in the money sense, but maybe the outdoors. I go to great lengths and use up a big chunk of my time to see new places!
What is your current state of mind?
Restless. My mind wanders often to far away places.
What do you consider the most overrated virtue?
None. Virtues are virtues for a reason.
On what occasion do you lie?
When I say I don’t want that last piece of cake. I want it, every last bite of it.
What’s your biggest insecurity?
Maybe my ability to speak Tagalog. I try my best, I do, but somehow people still laugh. Haha!
What is the quality you admire most in a woman?
The quality you admire most in a man?
What or who is the greatest love of your life?
Planet Earth. Everyday, I feel so incredibly lucky to be living in this insanely beautiful world.
When and where were you happiest?
I don’t remember it well, but probably the day I was born. Life is a pretty rare thing.
Which talent would you most like to have?
Maybe to paint or draw well? Photos are cool, but painting adds another personal layer things. It would be pretty awesome to paint or draw the mountains I see well!
What do you consider your greatest achievement?
It sounds simple, but I think my greatest achievement is being able to wake up every morning and being thankful for this life that we have. It’s easy to take it for granted, so just constantly having that mindset is already an accomplishment for me.
If you were to die and come back as a person or a thing, what would it be?
A humpback whale. I always dreamt of living in both the Arctic and the tropics and these animals seem do a pretty good job at it.
What is your signature characteristic?
Talking fast maybe? I live the by the motto, “Life’s too short to talk slow!”
What is your dream job?
Either being a full-time wildlife photographer or an expedition guide!
What’s your favorite item from Human that you own?
I love their tropical-themed shirts; it’s light and breezy, perfect for the tropical outdoors.
