Constricting conventions inspire creative rebellion. The gay community has been exemplary at this. By limiting identity through religion, law, and prejudice, Manila’s queers have found clever ways to live out loud—and often, through a carefree night out.

To capture 28 of B/PROUD’s #100HappyGays, B/BLOG headed to Cubao hotspot TODAY x FUTURE, where a predominantly LGBT crowd puts the art in party.

At FUTURE, the nightly themes are as crafty as the DJ sets. Drag queen makeup is a masterpiece. Revelers that span viral videographers to accessory designers spill out onto the street, cavorting and conversing.

This is where the outsider, the outsize personality, and the out-of-the-box thinker go to dance, Pale Pilsen in hand and body vibrating to Robyn. It’s hard evidence of the gay’s irrepressible spirit. One that believes it can dance its way to a tomorrow where no one in the day cares if you’re marching to your own beat. At least in the night, at this tiny bar in Cubao, the future is absolutely bright.

Support the campaign and tell us what being gay means to you today. Our hashtag: #100HappyGays.

Shahani Gania

SHAHANI: “People are more open to expressing themselves now. We are very lucky that we live in a country that tolerates homosexuality. Kasi in other countries talaga, it’s so backwards, they kill people. Brunei has just passed a law that you can stone to death people who are gay. The liberty that is given to us, we take for granted. We don’t learn more about ourselves, our sexuality. People need to be educated more. We have to accept na everything’s going global, we have to accept other people’s views.”

Carl Clemente & Angelo Ramirez de Cartagena

Senior Copywriter at J. Romero Advertising // Fashion Associate at Mega Magazine

ANGELO: “Gay today is expressing yourself and being free to be who you are regardless of what people will think and will say.  And that includes family, your friends, and society.”

CARL: “I think being gay today is your sexual preference. I still define it as somebody who goes for somebody of the same sex. And everything else about this person is purely philosophical. Like you can have an effeminate person who’s into the opposite sex. So I think being gay is somebody who goes for somebody of the same sex. And everything else is you know, just a product of progress because we can all subscribe to what anyone subscribes.”

PETERSEN: “The best thing about being gay is enjoying freedom. Right now we’re in this phase na parang may tolerance na siya. And since there’s tolerance, gay people have the freedom to be who they want to be. So it’s just fun to be gay because you can see gay people be who they want to be.”

AJ: “It’s hard but basically it’s loving the same gender as you are. It’s simply that. And there’s nothing unnatural about it.”

PAUL: “You can’t put gay in a question anymore, I think. Because gay is and has always been gay. I don’t know if it makes sense but it makes sense in my head.”

RAPH: “I just think being gay is being strong. I mean to face your life with all the criticisms or whatever, and you can survive from that, I think you’re being strong. If the person doesn’t like you, wala, girl. Brace yourself nalang, may ibang a-attack.”

RAPH, JULIANNA, AND TONI: “There’s no gay rule. In the gay world, it’s every bitch for herself. It’s a free market. If you’re not strong enough, you should go.”

  • True_Catholic

Let BENCH know that we are starting a boycott of their products (I am including this campaign in my talks across schools and parishes) since they continue to display pornographic and controversial images such as these. Even in our own little way, we would not stop until we make a dent on the sales of Bench products all over the country. We will knock at every door of every true Filipino Catholic who still values family and life to stop buying Bench products for us to make a statement that we would stand on our moral principles on the family and on the value of every human person as image bearers of God, not as sex objects and guinea pigs of their marketing team. God, have mercy on your people!

    • True_Filipino

How I wish the Filipino people can also easily boycott the dishonest and corrupt True_Catholic government officials in this country so the Philippines can be a little bit more progressive. #bitchplease

      • True_Catholic

I am one with you there. Catholics are to be True Catholics to serve the Filipino people.

    • paulo castro

first of all, i’m not gonna hide behind a screen name. my name is PAULO CASTRO, and i am one of the people featured in this blog. I’V GOT BALLS LIKE THAT.

secondly, let me tell you this. i used to be so angry. i used to be so defensive when it came to people with views such as yours. but i’ve grown up and realized so many things. i’ve grown up and learned what is most important; LOVE.

you see, you have beliefs, and we can respect that. but you can’t seem to have your beliefs and respect others. you are a walking contradiction to what YOUR CHRIST HIMSELF TAUGH YOU. to LOVE. yes, your beliefs may see us as “abominations” or “sinners”, but even with that philosophy, didn’t YOUR JESUS tell you to LOVE EVEN THOSE YOU PERCEIVE AS SINNERS?

with that being said, have you ever thought that maybe not everyone shares YOUR BELIEFS? that there are other belief systems in this world and THAT’S OKAY? NO?

THEN THAT MAKES YOU SELF RIGHTEOUS.

i grew up catholic, but left religion precisely because of people like you. you hate instead of loving. you judge instead of loving. you spread hate instead of loving. the only thing you don’t seem to do is LOVE. which ironically, is the greatest of all CHRIST’S commandments.

i no longer believe in religion. but i believe in something more powerful. RESPECT. EQUALITY. LOVE.

you can call that a “GAY AGENDA” all you want. all i know is, my parter and i love each other. and we sleep well at night knowing we wish nobody ill because of our subjective beliefs or judgements.

if you feel angry all the time because people do not subscribe to your belief system, THEN I SUGGEST YOU REASSESS YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH YOUR JESUS. LOOK IN YOUR HEART. BECAUSE THERE’S OBVIOUSLY SOMETHING MISSING.

      good day, love and light.

      • True_Catholic

Do you really believe about Respect, Equality, Love?
Then why do you not respect my own opinions about homosexuality?
Why do you not see that we, persons with same sex attractions who do not espouse LGBT ideologies, also deserves to be recognized by society?

Is it not true that all you care is your own GAY AGENDA?
You have no respect, equality, nor love for persons who have a different opinion from you.

    • paulo castro

also, if you’re implying that the “gay alternative lifestyle” is “wrong” based on your bible, then what say you about eating shellfish? or haircuts? aren’t those prohibited in the bible? and on the other hand, pedophilia, murder, rape, slavery, wife beating, treating women as property are all CONDONED IN THE SAME BOOK.

if you’re going to take the bible literally, do it to the whole thing. do not pick which verses and books are most comfortable to you. 🙂 🙂 🙂

      • True_Catholic

Tell me, does the Bible explicitly promote homosexual behavior? Or does it explicitly condemn it?

    • paulo castro

also, DIDN’T THE POPE, YOUR LEADER TELL YOU TO STOP YOUR OBSESSION WITH THE LGBT? you’re either not a very united bunch, or you’re being a very bad “true catholic”. lol. focus of feeding the hungry and helping others rather than judging people for not being your version of ideal people.

IF YOU CAN’T FIND GOOD PEOPLE, BE ONE. 🙂

      • True_Catholic

“The wrath of God is indeed being revealed from heaven against every impiety and wickedness of those who suppress the truth by their wickedness. For what can be known about God is evident to them, because God made it evident to them. Ever since the creation of the world, his invisible attributes of eternal power and divinity have been able to be understood and perceived in what he has made.r As a result, they have no excuse; for although they knew God they did not accord him glory as God or give him thanks. Instead, they became vain in their reasoning, and their senseless minds were darkened. While claiming to be wise,t they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for the likeness of an image of mortal man or of birds or of four-legged animals or of snakes. Therefore, God handed them over to impurity through the lusts of their hearts* for the mutual degradation of their bodies. They exchanged the truth of God for a lie and revered and worshiped the creature rather than the creator, who is blessed forever. Amen. Therefore, God handed them over to degrading passions. Their females exchanged natural relations for unnatural, and the males likewise gave up natural relations with females and burned with lust for one another. Males did shameful things with males and thus received in their own persons the due penalty for their perversity. And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God handed them over to their undiscerning mind to do what is improper.” – Romans 1:18-28

    • gaygod

Let BENCH know that nobody gives a fuck about your boycott.

      • True_Catholic

Okay then we shall be pushing for this boycott every talk that I give. :))

  • True_Catholic

Calling on mass media practitioners in the Philippines!

Everything that is now shown in local television, movies and print media is all about glorifying and highlighting the gay lifestyle, of people who come out as gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender, of indoctrinating our young people to embrace this identity as an alternative lifestyle.

Why have we not seen anything about persons with same-sex attractions that are struggling to remain chaste, and are rediscovering that sexual attractions is merely a part of one’s personhood and should not define their totality of being?

Why does our mass media insist on bombarding our public with one-sided presentations on homosexuality? Why do they continue to deny the existence of non-gays and ex-gays?

When will we see them feature this “third way”?

It’s about time media prove that they are not pro-gay, and staunched on the gay agenda. God have mercy on us!

        • True_Catholic

true let us take the Bible as a whole, not merely take verses that are most comfortable to you.

but have you seen how homosexual activity (take note that we are talking here of activities that entails choices, and not the persons who make these choices) is condemned by the Bible consistently from Old to New testament? Read Romans 1 to find out the description of this sin.

      • sai

yayyy! totally supportive of you, lovely person!

      • True_Catholic

Thank you for immediately judging me without even knowing me, and I am sorry if you feel that I have judged you. I have not – what I judge is the culture that promotes only those who are actively living the gay life and putting all others in the fringes of society.

I am a sinner. I used to believe that being gay is cool, and have explored all aspects of living that kind of life – but at the end of the day all it brought me was disappointments and rejection and egotistic living. Yes, Jesus loves sinners, but it was only when I surrendered to His love that I have indeed received that love – when I laid down at His feet all my dreams as a homosexual person, that He brought me into a realization of who I am – that I am more than being homosexual – that there is more to me than my sexual attractions!

It is sad that you left Catholicism – for there is much more than what popular media would like us to know about being Catholic – mass media is very biased against religion.

Being Catholic is to accept our brokenness, and accepting that brokenness brings us into a deeper knowledge of needing a Savior – that we cannot do things on our own, and that God has a bigger plan for us than we have for ourselves. Realizing this made me start to live out my life not from the definitive but limiting view of homosexuality, but from the totality of who I am as a son of God.

I am a person with same-sex attractions, and I do not let my attractions define who I am.

    • paulo castro

      • True_Catholic

Are you choosing only those verses that are most comfortable to you?
Where is it in the Bible that says homosexual activities (having sex with the same gender) is correct?

What I see is that consistently, from Old to New Testament, homosexual activities (mind you, I am talking of the activity done, not the person doing it) is condemned by the Bible. Take Romans 1 and read it thoroughly for the description of this sin. We are to hate the sin, love the sinner.

      • True_Catholic

Being good people doesn’t mean just agreeing with what everyone says.
Please give me the exact, in verbatim quote of Pope Francis that specifically backs up your claim. 🙂

    • jay

      Shut the fuck up!!!

      • True_Catholic

Thank you for this emotional and irrational reply 🙂

“I can’t for the life of me imagine that God will say, “I will punish you because you are black, you should have been white; I will punish you because you are a woman, you should have been a man; I will punish you because you are homosexual, you ought to be heterosexual.” I can’t for the life of me believe that is how God sees things.” – Archbishop Desmond Tutu

      • True_Catholic

Being black or white is a substantial distinction, it is of relative permanency – it doesn’t change over time.
Being homosexual is a superficial difference, it is a matter of choice – it changes over time.

One cannot place these two things on the same order and demand that same rights is given to it. When a homosexual person ceases to be homosexual, does these rights then are lifted from him?

Color or race is not equal to sexual orientation. They are diametrically different.

  • Charles

Puro “party” so far. Parang hindi lang naman sa art/culture/party ang mga gays. Asan na ang mga doctors, lawyers, nurses, architects, sana sila rin represented.

    • chillmuna

take a chill pill bro and read part 1 and probably wait for part 3 and 4

      • Charles

After the first two (of four), so far, ang hindi lang nag wo-work sa creative industry ay isang physical therapist. Pwera na ang mga students. Nasaan naman ang diversity?

        • otherjoseph

          represent yourself then.

        • chillmuna

          bitter ocampo

        • True_Catholic

This goes to show that even within the ranks of LGBT, there is discrimination. Indeed, not every sector is represented.

    • Marshmallow Princess

may stigma kasi pag nasa ganyang mga field if you’re gay. it’s harder for them to come out

    • True_Catholic

I agree. The persons represented here are those who are in the limelight of show business and celebrities. Indeed, this goes to show that discrimination does exist even among LGBT people – only those who have the guts to show off can be counted in, those who have no talent nor face/body are counted out.

  • Tomboy

    Attention True_Catholic:

Yo, if you truly want to represent persons with same sex attractions but do not espouse the LGBT mentality, then fucking REPRESENT!!! Do not hide behind anonymity. Who are you? You claim you exist, well then own up to it. You cannot enlighten people by hiding in the dark. Why would you even ask to be represented when you yourself are so afraid of putting yourself out there. You are such a hypocrite. Bitchin’ without thinkin’.

    • True_Catholic

We are not hiding. We are actually among you, even giving talks and seminars to those who have the heart to listen. Hypocrites are those who do not practice what they preach – but we do, we have accountability partners and we pray for one another.

Sadly, media doesn’t care about persons like us – have you even seen a show that promotes chastity on television? Sex sells, and these are the likes that get attention by popular mass media. I have yet to see GMA or ABS-CBN stage shows on chastity, or even feature life stories of those who pursue chastity. And Bench does more damage by featuring sex in all their billboards. We continue to preach boycotting Bench in our talks and seminars because of this.

  • True_Catholic

Human sexuality is more complex than labeling someone as gay or straight, homosexual or heterosexual. Presenting models such as these, one cannot help but see it as part of the gay agenda of promoting homosexuality in deference to other persons who may experience same-sex attractions but are not living a gay life. http://www.peoplecanchange.com
