Who knew a K-Pop connection could lead to a mutual devotion as staunch as the music genre’s fans? Metro Magazine fashion editor Eldzs Mejia and fashion filmmaker Fold Canela first met through a K-Pop fan group, recreating their favorite dance routines. Amid their shared love for K-culture, they’ve since become a couple to love for their quirky style and unhindered creativity.

Whether as a sounding board in conceptualizing mag editorials or an extra eye at fashion video shoots, one is always present to serve the other moral style support. B/BLOG chats with the cutesome twosome about a very modern courtship, separation anxiety, and finding creative completion in one another.

B/BLOG: So, who made the first move?

Eldzs: Mahabang proseso ang kalandian namin. Basta parang crush ko lang siya tapos niloloko ko yung mga tao: ‘Pakisabi kay Tupe (his nickname for Fold) crush ko siya.’

Fold: Apparently ako, mag-t-tweet ako ng something for Eldzs pero very cryptic.

E: Hindi, mali ka diyan. ‘Pag mag-t-tweet ako, sasabihin ko, ‘Oh my God, I’m so tired today.’ Tapos after a few minutes, mag-t-tweet siya, pero walang naka-tag. Sasabihin niya, ‘Aww, rest first blah blah.’ Huh. Eh I thought meron siyang boyfriend during that time. Oh my God, mind fucking ‘to, ha: parang ako yung kinakausap ni Fold sa Twitter.

Nung time na gusto ko talagang alamin was March 2. Nasa class siya, kasi nagtuturo din siya sa SoFA (School of Fashion & the Arts), and nagpadala akong flowers pero wala name ko. Nilagay ko lang sa card na parang, ‘Text me when you receive this.’ (Laughs) Tapos after nun, yun na, nag-meet up kami.

It’s been three years. What do you think made this work?

E: Wala, complete opposites kami. Siya, quiet and shy. Ako, maingay.

F: I guess yun yung okay kasi nag-co-complement kami.

E: Siya, maayos.

F: Siguro it also helps na—although it doesn’t work for everyone—we’re in the—

E: —we’re in the same industry.

F: So at least—

E:nage-gets namin isa’t-isa. From our previous relationships, masyadong polar opposite ang mga ginagawa nila. Tulad ng kanina, shoot niya pero I have to be there.

Creatively, how influential are you to each other?

F: Sa videos, for example, yung feeling ko laging dark.

For me naman, may styling ako tapospag sinabi niya ‘Hindi maganda,’ ‘O sige, fine, anong gagawin mo? Gawin mo.’

F: We consider each other our biggest critics.

Has being in a gay relationship ever been a problem with your families?

E: With mine, no. With him kasi, Christian and conservative. I go to their house but nandiyan lang siya, hindi lang siya binabanggit—hindi ‘O, kumusta na kayong mag-jowa kayo?’

Pero warm sila sayo?

E: Oo, warm. Pinapakain naman ako (laughs). As long as hindi siya…naghahalikan sa harap.

Do you have any future plans to collaborate?

F: Ako, when I started doing videos, siya ang pinaka-una kong stylist and creative director. Up until now, hindi ko kayang mag-function kung hindi siya yung nag-oo-versee.

E: Kunyari, may [styling for] lalaki-babae. Eh my forte is pang-babae. Eh siya, he likes to dress himself, sabi ko, ‘O, ikaw mag-style ng panlalaki.’ Ganun. May libre akong assistant stylist (laughs).
