A tight runway or the mere seconds allotted a commercial couldn’t contain Joseph Marco for very long. With a presence that befits a Roman royal, looks so regal they warrant a marble bust, and hair so high and mighty, we had no choice but to give the former ramp and commercial model the stardom that was inevitable.
Perhaps that’s why the 25-year-old’s had such a quick ascent in entertainment, from landing the first commercial he auditioned for (a Head & Shoulders ad starring Angel Locsin) to winning Best Actor for Saturday Night Chills at last year’s Cinema One Originals Film Festival. Good luck writing him off as just another studio-manufactured piece of man candy.
It’s a charmed path he continues on. With two new series on television, two magazine covers just shot, and an upcoming album, expect Joseph to soak up the rays of hot, rising fame very soon. B/BLOG gets as near to the heat as it possibly can.
Could you tell us about your role in ABS-CBN’s Honesto?
Since namatay nanay niya, nakita namin, tapos parang naging kuya niya ako. So I play the role of Elai. He’s a simpleton, a person lacking in common sense. So medyo slow siya mentally and very honest din siya. Kasi yung mga ganong tao, diba yung may problems sa isip, they don’t know how to lie.
You don’t seem to lie either. I heard you tell stylists not to touch your hair.
Yeah, yeah. Usually, I ask the stylist na baka pwedeng…kasi medyo mahirap siyang ayusin.
How did you get into entertainment anyhow?
I was doing ramp and commercial [modeling] and then met Tito [Keren Pascual] from my go-see for a Bench-Coke fashion show. So tinanong niya ako kung gusto kong mag-artista. Sabi ko, ‘Okay lang po.’ Pero at the back of my mind, alam ko showbiz is a really complicated world and siguro may mga bagay akong ayaw i-sacrifice since may girlfriend din ako at that time.
Were you also in school at the time?
Home study ako nun. I was taking Business Management. Gusto kong magkaroon ng restaurant someday. But before that, gusto kong makatapos ng culinary, like a legit school. Since mahilig rin ako magluto.
You look like that and you cook, too. Do you have a girlfriend?
I’m very single (laughs).
Okay, well if you asked a girl to your place, what would you prepare for her?
Maybe a good salad and then a steak—and some wine.
When you’re alone, what do you do with your time?
I’m currently watching Breaking Bad. Or I play the guitar and sing.
What do you listen to?
Mostly acoustic-alternative. Something like Boyce Avenue. May nasulat na akong song, pero isa pa lang. It’s about a girl na—hindi naman love, parang you want to get her attention. It’s Tagalog eh. Actually it’s about Twitter. So parang tini-tweet mo siya pero hindi siya nag-t-tweet back.
Well what’s a good strategy to get a girl’s attention?
I guess just be real to her. Approach her and treat her a bit special than the others so that she’d appreciate you.
Besides Honesto, are there other projects you’re excited about?
I was supposed to do a movie but since we’re taping everyday for Honesto, wala na-cancel na. But I’m gonna do this new teleserye called Pure Love, a remake of a Koreanovela. I play Dave, the love interest ng bidang babae na si Diane, which will be played by Alex Gonzaga. I’m gonna be starting [taping] this month when I get back from London. We’re shooting two magazine covers there.
Any favorite spots in Europe?
Of course, Italy, the Vatican. Unbelievable, it’s like a dream. Yung mga sculptures nila, grabe, sobrang na-amaze lang talaga ako. We went there two years ago through a cruise, stopping at Malta, Italy, France, Spain. I also really liked the Sagrada Familia.
What are you looking forward to doing this summer?
I think I just want to spend time with my family. Lately nga, I haven’t gotten the chance to hang out with them. I’ll visit my dad in Zambales.
Have you been to the surf spots there?
I kind of hate the sun. Nai-irita ako.
Ah. Just curious: are there any cool guys, dead or alive, who have influenced your career?
I guess Christian Bale. The way he portrays a character—magpapapayat siya o magpapataba siya. Like have you seen American Hustle? Galing kasi sobrang naiba from Batman.
So what if you were given a role where you had to get fat—or worse, lose the hair?
Sana pang-Hollywood din yung bayad (laughs). Hindi, joke lang. Magpapapayat, magpapataba, okay lang. Sa hair, huwag naman.
