Easing out of a summer wardrobe can be tricky. You don’t want to let go of your Hawaiian shirt and drawstring cheesecloth pants. Survivor nerds are starting to call you Zeke. Alas, it has to be done. Here are the five key pieces to help you get there.
Crisp white trousers. White pants say confidence, and they nudge you out of dirty situations, too—literally. Just don’t wear all white. In the wise words of Ray Ploshansky, that would be tempting the universe.
The Breton stripe sweater. Take a cue from Picasso and Gaultier. The category is creative. Credentials, optional.
The vibrant pique shirt. A trustworthy rule of thumb: Ditch the pastels. Unless you’re road-testing your preppy snob costume for Halloween.
True blue jeans. Blue jeans are forever, but finding that classic blue can be a pain. It’s tempting, but avoid glaring acid washes and gratuitous rips. We want cool, not campy.
The square aviators. These frames make you look like you’re a step ahead of the fashion cognoscenti. Trend alert!
The knit polo. Retro’s back but don’t go overboard. A plain one in a subdued hue is your go-to.
