It’s a cliché we love to indulge in, because it’s true: summer is all about hot, hot heat. When the serious slacks are off and the denim cutoffs are in, we get a little bit of reprieve from boring trig classes or long work hours. Just ask some of the guys and girls we got to know a little better—a smart gaggle making their names in film, food, and blogging.

Over popsicles and dirty ice cream, they dish out on their favorite summer getaways and the emoji that best suits their summer mood. Decked out in warm-weather digs, these young city folk show B/BLOG that in this heat, there’s more than one way to stay cool.

19, Blogger, QUEEN OF BLACK

You wear a lot of black on your blog. How would you translate this non-color in the summer?

Sometimes I try mixing and matching with lace and crochet tops because they’re really summery for me. Sometimes even if I wear black I can also transition it into summer by the textures and cut outs. Sort of like sexy sleek.

What are you looking forward to this summer?

More events!

How about trips?

Actually, yeah I just went to the beach and now I’m looking for some waterfalls, rivers, hiking naman. I really want to go on adventures especially before school since we have a four month break. I want to make the most of it.

What emoji best describes you right now?

I guess the sun emoji. The one without the face. Maybe because I’m really happy with everything that’s been happening to me. 160x160x298-black-sun-with-rays.png.pagespeed.ic.Tbxn779IwM

What’s the best way to stay cool right now?

By hanging out with your friends at the mall or having a picnic outside. I’ve also been planning a lot of the trips to the beach. In Batangas, there are so many nice beaches and the water’s pretty clear. I also like going to quiet places like waterfalls.

21, Chef & Swimmer, @mrkadvincula

Are you focusing more on swimming or cooking now?

Cooking, full time. But now I took a break. Since I graduated, I worked at EDSA Shang and after that I decided to travel with the family because it’s the only time na free lahat. Then after summer, I’ll apply again. Maybe a local restaurant na.

What are you looking forward to this summer?

Attending music festivals and going to surf spots like Baler. I’ve been there and I want to go again. I want to travel pa with my friends. Last Laboracay, I went with my friends. Sana by the end of summer, Cebu naman. Somewhere different.

Any dish you want to practice or master over the summer?

The perfect banana cake. That’s my goal this summer.

What emoji best describes you right now?

The peace sign. I always use that when saying goodbye.160x160x112-victory-hand.png.pagespeed.ic.9oYiAhrL7K

What’s the best way to stay cool right now?

Get a laugh out of everything. Think of something positive that will turn the situation around.

What do you think is the best coffee-based summer drink?

I honestly think it’s just a hot cup of black coffee. Just because, scientifically, a hotter drink will cool your body daw. But that’s just for me.

If you could concoct any special summer drink, what would it be?

Personally, I’m not a fan of super tailored drinks but my good friends over at Yardstick make this good coffee soda. It’s called the La Perla Pop. So it’s carbonated water with a shot of espresso and an orange slice on top.

What are you looking forward to this summer?

I’m most likely going to be in Hong Kong to study coffee roasting for a week maybe. Other than that, we’re going to be launching one or two brands, and on the 4th of July, we’re planning this event with Purveyr and Logiclub. It’s going to be a lifestyle event to celebrate the coffee industry. We’re going to tie up with Heima so it’s going to be at Brixton street in Kapitolyo, so people should check that out.

What emoji best describes you at the moment?

I made my own emoji. It’s a guy with eyes wide open, he’s surprised and amused at the same time like
whoa ( /●•●)/

What’s the best way to stay cool right now?

To stay cool you should follow @thebaristabox on Instagram (laughs). Just get your favorite drink in hand and chill out. Maybe get a job, that’s cool. Work on your future or something. That’s pretty cool. Working hard is cool. You can quote me on that.

Hey, Raiza! Are you looking forward to anything this summer?

It’s my time off. I started working even before I graduated, so it’s been that and I haven’t really had time for myself. So this summer is more about taking a break. I graduated and took my licensure. That took almost a year and I worked right after. So now that I don’t have any projects, I have a lot of free time for myself. I get to reconnect with a lot of friends from my high school and go on random day trips to the beach. Nothing too special, just basically spending time with them.

What emoji best describes you right now?

The hands up in the air. I’m just having a lot of fun lately!

Any skills you want to learn or classes you want to take?

I actually want to try different extreme sports. I’m going to try to see if I can go somewhere to try bungee jumping, scuba diving, or skydiving. I’m excited to learn more about it.

What’s up? How are you guys?

Joe: Tired. I haven’t been up this early in a while.

Paolo: We’re working on a five-song online thing. The band is going on hiatus in September.

Joe: ‘Cause he’s (Paolo) leaving for a semester in Europe.

Paolo: And when I get back in January, Joe’s leaving for Germany.

So what are you looking forward to this summer?

Joe: I’m looking forward to producing music, which is why I’m learning now so I can help the band produce that project. So yeah, making music and producing music. And working on my photography also since I’m buying a camera.

What emoji best describes you right now?

Joe: That smiley face na may maliit na pawis dito. ‘Cause it’s hot and it’s just like “heh.” I’m trying to lay low and do my own thing. A chill summer. 160x160x28-smiling-face-with-open-mouth-and-cold-sweat.png.pagespeed.ic.NydxJa4z1y

Paolo: The one with shades. Para mysterious.

What is the best way to stay cool right now?

Joe: I have this motto called DYOS. It means Do Your Own Shit. ‘Cause sometimes people get in the way and tell you “Oh, don’t do that. That’s not the in thing to do,” but then at the end of the day, if you want to do what you want to do, then just do your own shit.

Paolo: And support local independent music.

Joe: Yeah, on a serious note, support local independent music. We want to work on our passion.

22, Filmmaker, @lykagonzalez

Congratulations on your film! Has it sunken in that you’ll be at Cannes?

Thank you! It’s been really crazy, and I can’t wait, and we’re leaving for the festival soon… Our film (Agos: The Manila Dream) was accepted into the Cannes Court Métrage Short Film Corner. It’s for short film producers and directors to screen and possibly distribute their work.

Awesome. What are you looking forward to this summer?

After France, we’re spending two weeks in Italy, and a few days in Amsterdam. But I’m really looking forward to going to Italy. (Laughs). I’ve loved Italian culture ever since I watched The Godfather. (Laughs) I really like the sequel.

What emoji best describes what you feel at the moment?

I think it’s the rocket. People have been igniting me the past few moments. It’s like I’m going at full-throttle and I’m going to take off soon!

What’s the best way to stay cool right now?

Besides ice cream? (Laughs) A moment of stillness, amidst all the busy-ness of every day.
